12 Days of Christmas Writing Prompts

While most would say that the fun is nearly over, we’re here to keep the holiday spirits high and the creativity flowing! These Christmas writing prompts are all about what truly matters, not only during the holiday season, but all year-round - gratitude, compassion, kindness, family and friends. We’ve created a writing prompt for each of the 12 days of Christmas, which begin on the 25th of December and end on the 5th of January.

Here are 12 days of Christmas writing prompts, from us to you, this holiday season:

Day 1

Short story starter: It was Christmas Eve and I could not wait for the morning! I was so excited that I couldn’t sleep... That’s when I heard him - Santa was in my house!

Day 2

On Christmas morning, you check under your tree to find all the Christmas presents that were on your wishlist. What are 5 ways to show gratitude for these gifts?

Day 3

Write about your favorite Christmas tradition - is it decorating your Christmas tree with your family? Maybe it’s baking Christmas cookies? We want to know!

Day 4

Journal prompt: this holiday season, I can be kind to others by...

Day 5

You’re walking through your local forest and find a huge gingerbread house. It looks like there’s someone living in it! What happens next? Do you knock on the gingerbread door, or run away? Who’s in the house?

Day 6

Write a recipe for the best gingerbread man cookies.

Day 7

Write a Christmas song about all the things you’re proud to have achieved since last Christmas.

Day 8

You’re a news reporter and have an unbelievable story to tell! When you were out Christmas shopping, you spotted Santa Claus on his sleigh, being pulled by Rudolph and all the other reindeers - he flew right above you! Write a persuasive article to compel your audience to believe you.

Day 9

What is the best Christmas gift you’ve ever given to someone? Can you describe it in detail? Who did you give it to? Did it have a special meaning?

Day 10

Write a set of instructions on how to build the perfect snowman.

Day 11

Do you have any goals for the new year? If so, what are they? If not, can you write down something you’d like to achieve next year, and why?

Day 12

You made it to the end! What was your favorite thing about this Christmas season? Did you spend Christmas with family? Sang Christmas carols? Waited awake for Santa? Tell us all about it!
